Deforestation is the conversion of forested areas to non-forest land use such as arable land, pasture, urban use, logged area, or wasteland.[1][not in citation given] Generally, the removal or destruction of significant areas of forest cover has resulted in a degraded environment with reduced biodiversity. In many countries, massive deforestation is ongoing and is shaping climate and geography. Djouce Mountain, along with most of the island of Ireland, was systematically clearfelled during the 17th and 18th centuries, in order to obtain wood mainly for shipbuilding.Deforestation for agriculture in Benambra, Australia. Deforestation results from removal of trees without sufficient reforestation, and results in declines in habitat and biodiversity, wood for fuel and industrial use, and quality of life.

Since about the mid-1800s the Earth has experienced an unprecedented rate of change of destruction of forests worldwide. Forests in Europe are adversely affected by acid rain and very large areas of Siberia have been harvested since the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the last two decades, Afghanistan has lost over 70% of its forests throughout the country. However it is in the world’s great tropical rainforests where the destruction is most pronounced at the current time and where wholesale felling is having an adverse effect on biodiversity and contributing to the ongoing Holocene mass extinction.

Take what you want out of this, it is all of the info I know and looked up, I don’t expect you to use it all.

Before anyone can help much more, what are the guidelines for your assignment? How many words does it need to be? What is it you are hoping to prove in your writing? Is your paper supposed to be expository (explaining) or persuasive (convincing someone about your opinion)?

Try these steps:

1) Who is the audience (your reader)?

2) How long does the paper need to be?

3) How do you feel about the issue?

After you come up with a potential thesis statement, ask yourself if it’s narrow enough for the assignment.
