First you need to define what a civilization is, and how it differs from previous states of social activity for man. Were primative hunter-gatherers “civilized?” Did civilization arise when man began using tools? Building shelters? Tilling the ground? Or did civilization begin with the advent of language, either spoken or writen? Or perhaps civilization began when men began to specialize; one becoming a smithy building tools and another becoming a healer, a third a tribal leader.
Was it an all-at-once thing? Or did it happen gradually over many hundreds or thousands of years? You can have a lot of fun with this essay if you want, because you can address some fairly cool controversies.
