x+1 1/4 = -5/8

x= -5/8 – 1 1/4

x = -5/8 – 10/8

x = – 15/8

To get this answer you need to start with negative 5/8 and then subtract 1-1/4 from it, which would result in a larger negative number that combines the two. If I tell you the answer, you have learned nothing.

By the way, Gurkam is in error as 1.875 is not 1-5/8.

And Gotcha and Camera are correct, but note that it is 15/8 and not 1-5/8

You probably have to solve this for x. Your equation is the same as

x + 10/8 = -5/8

now subtract 10/8 on each side

x = -5/8 – 10/8 = (-5 – 10) / 8 = -15 / 8

-1 7/8

because look:

1 fourth = 2 eighths

so its

x +1 2/8 = (-5/8)

just count upward to get to 1 2/8

so it would be -1 7/8

-1 7/8 + 1 1/4 = (-5/8)

1+ 1/4= 1.25, -5/8= -0.625

subtract 1.25 from both sides and get X=-1.875 or -15/8
