Petroleum (fossil fuel oil) and coal (fossil fuel) pretty much run the planet. Coal and oil power loads of stuff and provide many synthetic products. Energy alternatives are hydroelectric (dams and the water turns electric generation turbines), nuclear power (heat to make steam to turn turbines), wind (wind to turn turbines), and solar (either direct to electric with photoelectric cells, or to focus the sun’s rays to boil water, make steam, and run a turbine) can all generate electricity, but don’t come close to the amount of power we get from fossil fuels.
At some point oil and coal are going to run out and then . . . ?
