The Northwest Passage was the water route across the top of the North American continent, and it was a heckuvalot shorter and safer, than going down around South America and beating your way over to the Orient.

The Northwest passage was a dream to go North of Canada East to West to get to Asia faster. It never occurred because the permafrost on land and the ice on the water is too thick.

Old Lady is right, except that that is only why they WANTED to find it. When they did find it (Amundsen was the first to survive trying to cross through it), they found that it is probably more dangerous than going around the Horn. That is why the Panama Canal was built, in spite of the great difficulty and cost. Remember how Lewis and Clark were going to travel up the Mississippi/Missoury by water and then just hop over a little mountain pass to end up at the Pacific? Same concept. The reality didn’t work out very well in either case.
