Korea is a geographic area, civilization, and former state situated on the Korean Peninsula in East Asia. Korea is currently divided into North Korea and South Korea, and the term “Korea” may refer to either or both of these states. South Korea is officially known as the Republic of Korea and North Korea is known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. South Korea is bordered on the north by North Korea and on south by the Korea Strait, which separates it from Japan. Soviet and United States troops occupied the northern and southern part of the country. The two Cold War enemies helped change both North and South Korea’s governments understanding of their own ideologies, leading to Korea’s current political division.
