First and foremost, they need to know how to do research to find answers to simple book-knowledge type questions.

they need to have a good organizational skills, cause they are in charge of what everybody does, and how and when it gets done.
They are the supervisor to everyone, they dictate where the cameras are placed, how they shoot the scene, how the actors should deliver there lines, or proceed with a scene, whether or not a certain location is more suitable for a particular scene, etc… Its a lot of work!! not to mention they have to edit the film, which means hours and hours of cutting and rearranging scenes to make sure the movie makes sense and flows.

the director is in charge of casting (picking actors for the role of each character) and overseaing the filming of the movie. He tells the actors how to act out a particular scene and tells the crew (cameramen, lighting, etc) what he needs to have done.
