what is the formula for calculating sales tax??? need to answer a sales tax question on homework answer?
question- you have $40.00. You wish to buy a T0shirt costing $14.50 and a pair of jeans costing $23.95. There is a 5% sales tax on clothing. Do you ahve enough money to pay for both?

Okay this will be quick and easy. First take $14.50 and add it to $23.95. That should give you a total of $38.45. Now take the sum of the two numbers (in this case it would be $38.45) and multiply it by 5% (0.05) You get 1.9225 so round that up to $2.00 and you add that to the first sum ($38.45+$2.00). The answer you should get is $40.45. As you can see that is a little over $40.00 so if you can come up with some change you should be able to buy both the shirt and the jeans. However, if you only have $40.00 then, no you can’t get both.

Add the two items. Multiply the total by .05, that is the tax, add the tax to the total of the two items and that is the total cost.
