What is the difference/relationship between a democracy and a republic?

That depends on how you define “republic”. The Oxford English Dictionary says the following:
“A state in which the supreme power rests in the people and their elected representatives or officers, as opposed to one governed by a king or similar ruler; a commonwealth. Now also applied loosely to any state which claims this designation.”.
By this definition, all democracies are republics.
However, a definition that is popular in modern conservative circles is more restrictive. In the latter definition, a “republic” is essentially a constitutionally-limited democracy.

A democracy allows it’s citizens to directly debate and decide on issues that will affect them. A republic elects people to do the debating and deciding for people who elect them. I believe a republic is best in a crisis because the logistics of a democracy would make it impossible to work smoothly and people have a tendency to panic.
