a lot of people might post on the meanings of these lines from their own mayhaps excellent opinions, but your best bet is to just email Simon and/or Garfunkle themselves and ask them what they themselves had in mind when they wrote the song in the first place. don’t be surprised however should they answer you back [and they just might you know, you never know] saying it’s just for you to get a meaning out of it for yourself. what ideas came to your own mind at first when you read or heard those lyrics, any images popped into your mind right away? Most often that is a clue to what meaning it may have been meant for you to have for yourself. Or not? sometimes music doesn’t have to have metaphysical meanings for anyone or anything, it just makes nice rhyme and happy or emotional response times. that’s all.
