Lactic acid is an acid formed during intense muscle use. It is formed during anaerobic (with oxygen) metabolism of ATP which occurs much more quickly than aerobic (with oxygen) metabolism of ATP. Anaerobic metabolism of ATP results in a lot of free hydrogen ions which cannot be buffered as quickly as they are released, which causes the local pH to drop and the muscle to take on an acid pH. This anaerobic change of pH results in a fermentation reaction in the muslce, and lactic acid is the result of the fermentation. The production of lactic acid is the cause of acute muscle soreness after intense exercise.

The expression “lactic acid” is used most commonly by athletes to describe the intense pain felt during exhaustive exercise, especially in events like the 400 metres and 800 metres.

Lactic acid, also known as milk acid, is a chemical compound that plays a role in several biochemical processes….

Lactic acid is primarily found in sour milk products, such as: koumiss, leban, yogurt, kefir and some cottage cheeses. The casein in fermented milk is coagulated (curdled) by lactic acid.

Lactic acid causes the “burning” sensation felt in muscles during high intensity exercise and also prevents muscles from working their best.
