In chapter 12, Jem is upset that his friend Dill is staying home for the summer and won’t be visiting. Also, Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to church when Atticus is away. The church building is old and the kids notice that members of the congregation don’t want them there. The minister is nice to them, though. The wife of the man accused of rape receives a special collection because her husband is out of work. When they get home, their aunt is waiting for them. It has been a long time since I read this book, so I think I’ll read it again. You should too, it is a great story. If you need more info, google the title and you’ll get it.

Looking at it real quick, I would say that it is explaining the difference in the social and racial classes in the town. Cal took the children to her black church and was scorned by one of the women in the church for bringing her white charges with her. The Pastor of the church then intervened and welcomed the children because they father, Atticus, was defending one of their own. The Finch’s where one of the wealthier, older families in town and could have been snobs and looked down their noses at the “lesser” people in town, both black and white, if they so choose. But Atticus choose to help those who had less than them in hopes of making their lives better. Because the Finch’s were of the “genteel” class, they could do as they pleased without concern what other people thought.

You will probably get many different answers on this question, as people interpret things differently. This book invokes much thought.
