It’s like a generalization, or a mythic “stock character”. Over the years, the same types of characters show up in all different stories and cultures because of the elements that people identify strongly with. Look at your relationships with your parents and other people, how you solve problems, things that have happened to you in your life. Examples might be like David fighting Goliath if you have overcome some adversity, or maybe you’re like King Arthur, questing for something that’s very important to you. Try finding characters that remind you of yourself from literature.

The word archetype has a number of meanings, but it may help you to think of it almost like a stereotype. They are similar in a way.

For example, archetypes we see in story books are the kind godmother, the wicked step-sister, the greedy king, etc…

Stereotypes, which you can easily identify in school, like the Jock (a sports star), a nerd (someone who likes to study), are very similar to this idea of an archetype.

Think of some of the ways that other people define you. For example, the sweet grandson, the naughty boy, the class clown, …

Use those and explain why you feel you fill those roles.

Hope this helps.

Eden*
the original pattern or model of which all things of the same type are representations or copies (eg, Romeo and Juliet is the archetype for a tragic love story.)
