A thesis statement is your “argument” for the paper. (Pearl’s character, in Hawthorne’s The Scarlett Letter, is used as a symbolic combination of both her mother, Hester, and her father, Arthur.)
It gives the main point/argument of your paper. It helps to clarify, to the reader, what your essay will be about.
Although it “can” appear anywhere in the first two paragraphs, if writing the traditional five paragraph essay, it should be the LAST sentence of your first (introduction) paragraph.
The thesis statement should also be restated (not exactly word for word) in the conclusion paragraph, to show the essay coming full circle–and that you have proven your thesis/argument.

A thesis statement is a sentance that tells what you are trying to prove or show in your paper. It usually is the first sentance and all of the body of the paper should relate to the thesis. For instance, if you are doin a paper about school uniforms, you might have this thesis- “School uniforms increase academic performance.” Or if your paper is about eating healthy you might say “Eating three servings of fruits and vegetables a day will make the body healthier.” Then the rest of your paper supports your statement.
