It is an economy which is self sustaining. It does not rely on imported goods or trade. In the early days many communities were self sustaining because they had to be. Many people did not have the ability to travel, nor the means to do so. People lived in isolated places, like the Inuit,(Eskimo’s), so they had to be self-sufficient.
