Generally, the only thing literature needs to survive is popularity, but every once in a while it needs a little luck. To illustrate this, look at the epic poem Beowulf, which is now known as the oldest, and one of the greatest pieces of English literature. A man named Robert Cotton had the only surviving piece in his library, as he was a collector of archaic manuscripts. Interestingly though, by where it was placed in his library, it was obvious he didn’t hold the manuscript in high regard. Eventually his library burned to the ground, and Beowulf was one of the pieces that survived from the fire, and even then it wasn’t held in high regard by Literature scholars until the late 19th century. Now, Beowulf in synonymous with classic medieval literature. Luck kept it around long enough for someone to discover it, but popularity will keep it around forever.
A more modern example is Harry Potter. The first printing was of no more than 1000 copies, and had it not become a success, those 1000 copies would have eventually been lost, destroyed, etc. However with the book’s world wide publicity, millions of copies are being printed, instantly entering the book into the literary canon. The canon is nothing more than work that literary scholars deem valuable enough that everyone should read.
I hope this was helpful. Good luck

The great books, the ones that become favorites generation after generation, are those that speak to the human condition. Not much has changed in how we live, love, fight, hate, and die. Shakespeare addressed many of the same issues that we face today, and did so with intelligence, irony and humor, so we still enjoy his works. Most of the books popular today will be forgotten in a couple of generations. A few will stand out because they tell a story that transcends time, they will tell a story that continues to speak to the heart.
