What does it mean to be human?
Favorite Answer
Biological: Look up the definition of H. Sap as a species.
Psychological: This is not as clear-cut as thought when I was in grad school. Virtually every cognitive ability, every social or individual behavior, of H. Sap has been independently observed or tested in other beings. For a while, we thought we were the only species developed enough to
(1) use tools;
(2) create tools;
(3) generalize and discriminate properties.
(4) recognize lack of a quality (“Hand me something heavy that’s not yellow — I need to squish this wasp.”);
(5) communicate through language.
Ethics / Morals: Higher primates develop tribal behaviors in response to experiences from long before the presence of any of the current members. Various species show altruism, helping those not of their immediate social group (or even their own biological classification), even at risk to themselves.
Religious: pick your religion / denomination, and apply the sacred writings as you deem appropriate. Do dolphins believe in life after death? Do cats respect a creator? I have no idea, as I haven’t learned their modes of communication well enough to raise the issues.
