I think it means that you must understand all the events that have happened in the past in order to completely understand why something is happening now. The past and present relate to each other. For example 2 countries might be at war now but to completely understand why the war is happening you must understand the history of the 2 countries.

there’s a saying in filipino that says “and hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, di makakarating sa paroroonan” which means if you don’t look back where you came from, you wont be able to reach your destination. Filipinos are very particular with debt of gratitude. this is showing gratitude to those people who helped you to become who you are today.
