Similarities:

WWI did end, but the emotions that still thrived helped spark WWII. The similar feelings of national pride and power were still in every country.

WWI was helped spark by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by an Serbian Nationalist. Germans gained power and pride with Hitler which helped boost their nationalist thoughts.

Lots of losses, on both sides.

Almost all of Europe was affected.

WWI and WWII: Fighting countries gained or lost colonies in other parts of the world.

Many revolutions sparked before and after.

Germans took to arms again. (As part of the WWI peace treaty, they were to not be a militant coutnry, which is what they were basically based upon).

A big economic boom during the war.

The USA didn’t get instantly involved in WWI and WWII. They profited at first by selling arms and weapons to both sides of the war.

Redrawing of maps. Austria-Hungary Empire was separated in WWI and Germany split in two by WWII.

Differences:

Weapons and advances in technology in WWII

No longer trench warfare as it was in WWII

Formation of alliances after war. Countries didn’t just bicker and reach no conclusion on a treaty as it was in WWI.

Germany separated into two different sections that symbolized the tensions between communism and democracy.

People learned from their lessons this time.

World War One was originally called “The Great War” or “The War to End All Wars”. Obviously, it wasn’t, but it was exceedingly brutal and it was the first war where chemical weapons were widely used. It started because Austrian Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Yugoslavia. Austria and Germany were allied with each other, so they fought against Yugoslavia and her allies, who were Britain and France, amongst others. The war lasted from 1914 until 1918 and ended mainly because of a ‘flu epidemic that killed millions of people. Germany lost this war.

In World War Two, Germany and Austria were allies again, with Italy and several other countries, including Japan. They fought against Britain, France, Russia and their allies. This war lasted from 1939 until 1945. The USA did not join in the fight until the Japanese forced their hand by attacking Pearl Harbour in December 1941. Germany and her allies lost again.

The similarities are that the same countries were fighting each other.

Germany was a major protagonist in both wars.

The fighting was not restricted to Europe as battles occurred all over the world.

Soldiers came from many different countries, fighting for whichever side their governments had alliances with.

Motorised vehicles were used in both wars. They had only just been invented prior to WW1.

Tanks were invented and used in WW1 for the first time. They were also significant in WW2.

Airplanes were also used for the first time in WW1. By WW2, they were more technologically advanced and could do a lot more damage.

Chemical weapons were a feature of both wars.

In both wars, innocent civilians were often targets, having their houses bombed in air raids, etc.

The major difference was that of the atomic bombs dropped by the USA on two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the only time, to date, that atomic weapons have been used against people.
