Psychosis refers to derangement, with or without an organic cause, limiting or damaging a person’s social functioning, increased loss of contact with reality and personality changes from moderate to severe deterioration. Signs and symptoms include detachment, confusion, lack of appetite or increased appetite, fear, paranoia, resltessness, mumbling or incoherent speech, or odd beliefs and thinking spoken aloud, hallucinations such as auditory, visual, and even olfactory or gestation hallucinations. Generally, psychiatrists agree that psychosis can be summed up as “loss of contact with reality with the inclusion of hallucinations and paranoid or unrealistic ideation.” Psychosis can also happen to anyone, and is common in such mental illnesses as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and even manic depressive disorder. Psychosis has only recently, in the past 50 years, become treatable with the use of such medications like Zyprexa and Adavan.
