Seven themes of biology

1. Cellular structure and function

a. Cell – smallest unit capable of all life functions

2. Reproduction – making more of a kind through generations

3. Metabolism – sum of all chemical reactions carried out by an organism.

4. Homeostasis – maintaining stable internal conditions in spite of changes in the external environment.

5. Heredity – passing of characteristics through generations

a. Gene – a set of inherited instructions for making proteins contained in DNA, deoxyribonucleic acid.

b. Mutation – a change in the DNA of a gene

i. Mutations in body cells (somites) affect the individual

ii. Mutations in sex cells (gametes) affect the offspring

6. Evolution – change in the inherited traits of species over time. The essence of biology.
