b. Mutation – a change in the DNA of a gene

i. Mutations in body cells (somites) affect the individual

ii. Mutations in sex cells (gametes) affect the offspring

6. Evolution – change in the inherited traits of species over time. The essence of biology.

a. Species – a group of genetically similar organisms that can produce fertile offspring

b. Natural selection – term coined by Charles Darwin – individuals with traits that increase their chances of reproduction and survival.

7. Interdependence – interaction of organisms

a. Ecology – the science that studies the interactions of living organisms with each other and with the non-living part of the environment.
