If you mean computerising, I think it has something to do with getting information faster. We have become a people that likes instant gratification.
The police needed to be able to get records faster as a means of tracking down criminals and plotting patterns of crime.
Doctors need access to information to help people quicker.
People wish to know what is going on in the world without having to wait for the next newspaper or newscast.
Students need to be able to get study material for homework (If they do it). They have a lot more to learn and less time to learn it.
Markets also found that they can track what people are buying.

In the mid to late 90’s we used them mostly for porn… then there was also instant messanger. Now I use mine mostly for scholarly stuff and work. Not so much on the porn thing anymore.
