The thesis statement is that sentence or two in your text that contains the focus of your essay and tells your reader what the essay is going to be about.

Thesis Statement Examples

Example of an analytical thesis statement:

An analysis of the college admission process reveals two principal problems facing counselors: accepting students with high test scores or students with strong extracurricular backgrounds.

The paper that follows should:

explain the analysis of the college admission process

explain the two problems facing admissions counselors

Example of an expository (explanatory) thesis statement:

The life of the typical college student is characterized by time spent studying, attending class, and socializing with peers.

The paper that follows should:

explain how students spend their time studying, attending class, and socializing with peers

Example of an argumentative thesis statement:

High school graduates should be required to take a year off to pursue community service projects before entering college in order to increase their maturity and global awareness.

The paper that follows should:

present an argument and give evidence to support the claim that students should pursue community projects before entering college

A thesis statement is the main point of your essay/paragraph. It typically is the first sentence of your first paragraph but can be the last.

So let’s say you have an essay about violence on tv and how it influences teens.

So here’s an example:

Violence shown on TV does/does not influence teens to commit violent acts or crimes.

Then you follow with your details (typically 3 supporting sentences to end your paragraph.)

You’ve never heard of a thesis statement? It is the topic sentence of your essay in which you are trying to prove and/or support.

Here is an example from my college admissions essay “If I had the chance to spend a day with anyone in the world, past or present, I would like to spend the day with my grandmother on my mother’s side, Florence Patricia. “

In “Master Harold and the Boys,” Hally resorts to rascism in order to hide his insecurites.

A thesis is a statement you pose, then you fill the rest of the paper by proving it.

it’s the last sentence of the introduction paragraph in an essay. it explains what you are trying to prove in your paper and how you are trying to prove it.

example: In the Renaissance, the Church’s authority was weakened after new forms of religion emergerd, the church’s corruption was exposed, and the humanist revoultion evolved.

hope this helps!

good luck!
