My 7th grade math teacher asked me the same question. I said I used it to add up prices while shopping at places like the mall or the grocery store. You could also say that you used math while you tried to figure out how much of a tip you owed the waiter at a restaurant. Or even finding sales tax on something you wanted to buy! These are just simple suggestions but I hope this helps!!

Did you use math over the summer?

Was there a day where you figured out how much time you would need to get to the bus stop in order to be on time for a movie?

Did you count out how much money you had to buy something and then figure out how much you would have left over to do something else?

Did you make cookies, measuring ingredients? Did you ride your bike for any distance, eg. out to a point and then back home? If you were a lifeguard, why did you sit up so high? Did you serve up any meals to your family, dividing up the food? Did you bounce any balls? Did you run any races? Did you dive into shallow water, and if not, why not? Did you figure out how much paint you needed to paint your room? You would’ve needed math skills for any of these activities (and many others you can think of).

Did you go shopping? You can talk about adding and multiplication if you live in an area with tax.

Did you cook anything? Measuring and stuff deal with math.

Go on a trip? If you drove 500 miles and your doing 60 miles an hour how long did it take you. Division and averages and etc comes from driving.

Math is all around you!!

“We all use math every day.” Not just over the summer. The one big area everyone left out is temperature. You use the weather report to plan trips and what to wear. In the summer in the U.S. people wear light clothing because it’s hot and in the winter they wear heavier clothing because it is cold. Time, temperature, money, distance, cooking etc. is all math. How many songs on your iPOD?

sounds like fun, or not.

well you could write about money, that always takes maths. You have to work out howmuch money you have to give, what combination of coins and notes, how much change you’re going to get. Also if you went on holiday you probably had to use ratios to work out how much money things cost when you convert them into your own currency.

if you played snooker or pool (or pretend you did) you have to work out which angle to you have to hit the ball at and the angle at which it has to hit the cushions in order to go into the pocket.

i cant think of much else i’m afraid, sorry, Louise x
