The sum of two numbers is -11. Twice the first number minus the second is 32. Find the numbers…?
Favorite Answer
1st method
1. X + Y= -11
2. 2X – Y = 32
3. Now look at the positve and the negative y in these equations. If it is like this you can add these equations together, allowing you to get X alone.
4. 3X = 21, divide each side by 3.
5. X = 7
6. substitute x for 7 in the first equation.
7. 7 + Y = -11
8. subtract 7 from both sides. Y= -18
Second Method
1. X + Y= -11
2. 2X – Y = 32
3. Now, in the first equation, move the X to the other side.
4. Y = -11 – X
5. substitute this into the second equation
6. 2X – (-11 – X) = 32, use distributive property to multiply negative 1 into both -11, and -X
7. 2X +11+X = 32 is the same as 3X +11= 32
8. subtract 11 from both sides
9. 3X = 21
10. X = 7
11. substitute the 7 into the first equation again
12. 7 + Y = -11
12. subtract 7 from both sides
13. Y= -18
Now substitute these values into the second equation. The numbers, 7 and -18 make these equations true. Thanks, hope you liked my answer.

2x – y = 32 2x – y = 32 plug in for y and x = 7
Solve using substitution or elimination…. there are other ways but this is what is taught first usually. I used elimination !
Final Answer: X = 7 and Y = -18 … Hope that helped : )
y + x = -11
2y – x = 32
So if you add both problems together you get:
(y + 2y) + (x + -x) = (-11 + 32)
3y = 21
y = 7
now that you know y = 7, just substitute it in the original problem.
(7) + x = -11
x = -18.
Your answer is x = -18, y = 7
let the 2 numbers be x, y
x+y = -11
2x-y = 32
Come on, struggle a bit and do it yourself instead of throwing up your hands…
