Hi, I need help with a speech for my college public speaking class. It’s a two minute speech for a special occasion where I have to present an award to a baseball player on the yankees. I just need some help picking a yankee and giving him an appropriate award. Thank you.

JORGE POSADA, Catcher

He started a foundation to help kids born with craniosynostosis. My son was born with that, so I can appreciate his work!!

“Can you imagine having your baby born with a defect of his head, making his brain more sensitive to injury? That’s hard for a new parent! One Yankee helping this situation is Jorge Posada. He is a catcher, who founded an organization for parents whose children have this birth problem, called ‘craniosynostosis’……”

Good luck!

Look on their team website. There should be player profiles. Pick one and Google him and find out more about his life. Usually when an award is presented, the presenter recaps the person’s career so you need to know for example, where grew up, what positions he’s played in the past, recent accomplisments, how long he’s been on the team, etc.

Use issues important in your community. For example, how do you feel about the memorial planned for Ground Zero? There is much information out there, and more than one way to see it. What are your classmates talking about? If Ms. Spears is a hot topic, you might want to talk about parenting issues – how much latitude should the courts have in severing parental control over a child’s life? OJ? Should a criminal be allowed to profit from his crimes? What if his profits go to his own children or the children of his victims? If you want to take it on, politics is always a hot topic. Where do you stand on health care? Tax reform? Public finance of elections? Scan the talk show topics for current issues. Scan news magazines for headlines that capture your attention. I don’t know your age group or area, so more specifics are difficult. If you are under 18, mental health care is a great subject. If you are under 21, planning for the future. 21 – 31 – family vs. career, 31 + personal happiness vs. financial security….and so on. Let us know what you decide, please.

I don’t know how much this can help, but you could check their roster and pick someone from the team. Like, you can pick a pitcher and commend him for his excellent stats and his dedication. Or do the same for some of the others. I would advise you not to pick one of the players who has been involved with major scandals lately.

Pick one that never made the news for drug abuse or gambling and commend him for keeping his overpaid nose clean.
