simple math question????

how do you solve these problems??????

-one printing machine works twice as fast as another. when both machines are used, they can print a magazine in 3 hours. how many hours would each machine require to do the job alone?

-one pump can fill a water tank in 3 hours, and another pump takes 5 hours. when the ank was empty, both pumps were turned on for 30 minutes and then the faster pump was turned off. how much longer did the slower pump have to run before the tank was filled?

can anyone help me on this cuz i’m horrible on these types of prob…..??????

ty in advance…

Suppose the slow machine can print k units in 1 hour.

Then the faster one can print 2k units in 1 hour.

Together, the machines can print 3k units 1 hour.

Both machines together print 1 magazine in 3hr.

1 magazine therefore contains 9k units of printing.

To get the printing time, divide 9k by the printing rate of the machine or machines in use.

The slow machine will take 9k/k = 9 hours alone, and the faster one will take 9k/2k = 9/2 = 4.5 hours.

————————–

The fast pump fills 1/3 of the tank in 1 hour.

The slow pump fills 1/5 of the tank in 1 hour.

Together, they fill 1/3 + 1/5 = (5 + 3)/15 = 8/15 of the tank in 1 hour.

In 30min, they fill half this amount, namely 4/15 of the tank.

That means there is 11/15 of the tank still to fill.

To fill 11/15 of the tank, the slow pump will take an additional time:

(11/15) / (1/5)

= 11 * 5 / 15

= 11/3 hr.

For question 2:

If pump A fills 1 tank in 3 hours, it fills 1/3 tank per hour. Similarly, pump B fills at 1/5 tank per hour. For 1/2 hour, they would fill 4/15 tank (1/6 + 1/10). After the first 1/2 hour, there is 11/15 of the tank left to fill. For pump B to fill the remaining amount at its rate of 1/5 tank per hour, it would work an additional 3 and 2/3 hours or 3 hours and 40 minutes.

let x = machine 1

machine is twice as fast, so machine2 = 2x

together they equal 3 hours, so x + 2x = 3

solve for x, 3x = 3 hrs, so x = 1

therefore machine 1 =1 hour

machine 2 equals 2 times1 so 2 hours
