They both run for the same school office and competition divides them.
One of them gets beaten up and the other one stands there and doesn’t even try to help.
They go on a field trip to the zoo and aren’t paying attention, and one of them (or both) falls in with the lions.

you could use the classic boy comes between them, if they’re both girls or you could have one of them get into a class that the other one really wanted to get into, like a crafts class or something, and they start to not be friends.
