Right well we have this homework and we have to explain why ,when the metal gauze is put above the bunsen flame the falme doesn’t pass through and when the bunsens been blew out and the gauze is put over the gas the the top of the gauze is lit why the flame stays there. Can anyone please help! I’ve looked on the internet and this is my last chance . Thanks

The metal gauze is a good conductor of heat. This means that when the gauze is lowered onto the flame, the heat of the flame is conducted into the gauze and there is not enough heat above the gauze to sustain a flame.

When the gas is lit above the gauze, the heat at the bottom of the flame is conducted away and the gas below the gauze is not hot enough to ignite.
