Let the numerator = x and denominator = y
Therefore:
(x+1)/(y+1) = 1/2 and x/((y-x) = 3/4
simplifying the first equation,
(x+1) = 1/2(y+1)
2(x+1) = (y+1)
2x + 2 = y + 1
so y = 2x + 1
substitute this into the second equation
x/(y-x) = 3/4 where y = 2x+1
x / (2x+1 – x) = 3/4
x / (x+1) = 3/4
x = 3/4(x+1)
4x = 3x + 3
x = 3
use x=3 to find y using y = 2x+1
and thus: y = 2(3) + 1 = 7
The fraction is 3/7 (check it by testing (3+1)/(7+1) = 4/8 = 1/2 and 3/(7-3) = 3/4
