Really hard fraction problem!?

This is a question that is really hard for me to answer!!! i have a week to

solve it and turn it in to my instructor!!!! HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!! here it

goes……..

One evening, Mama baked a large batch of pastries for her family, which

consisted of Papa and their three children: Ed, Lisa, and Judy. During the

night, Papa got up and ate 1/3 of the pastries. He then (separate from the

1/3) gave one pastry to the family dog, Spike.

The oldest son, Ed was the next to get up. He planned to eat 1/4 of the

pastries, but when he separated them into 4 piles, he saw there were 3

pastries left over. He decided to feed those 3 pastries to Spike. Ed then

ate the original planned 1/4 of the pastries.

Lisa awoke next and gobbled down 1/3 of the remaining pastries. Before

going back to bed, Lisa gave 2 pastries to Spike.

The last family member to awaken and visit the kitchen was young Judy.

She ate 8 pastries and then gave 1/8 of what was left to Spike.

The next morning Mama noticed there were only 14 pastries left! She ate

2, gave 2 to Spike, and then split the remaining pastries evenly for her

whole family, (5 people in all: Mama, Papa, Ed, Lisa, and Judy) to have for

breakfast.

How many total pastries did Mama bake originally?_____________________

How many pastries did each person (and Spike)) consume?

Papa-_____________

Lisa-____________

Mama-_____________

Ed-___________

Judy-____________

Spike (total)-_____________

I wrote exactly what the paper says!!!!! so thats all the info i have!!!!

THANKS!!!!

The way to work the problem is to work it in reverse. That is, start with mama.

First add and calculate the number of pastries and, second, after you calculate the total number of pastries, count the pastries for each member.

Mama 14

Spike +2 = 16

Judy 16 + 8 = 24

Spike 24 + 2 = 26

Lisa 2/3 p = 26 so p = 39

ED 3/4 p = 39 so p 52

Spike = 52+ 3 = 55

Spike = 55 + 1 = 56

Papa 2/3 p = 56 so p = 84

Total pastries = 84

Papa 1/3 84 = 28 balance 56

Spike 1 balance 55

Spike 3 balance 52

Ed 1/4 52 = 13 balance 39

Lisa 1/3 39 = 13 balance 26

Spike 2 balance 24

Judy 8 balance 16

Spike 2 balance 14

Mama 2 balance 12

Spike 2 balance 10

Mama 2 balance 8

Papa 2 balance 6

Ed 2 balance 4

Judy 2 balance 2

Lisa 2 balance 0

Papa 28 + 2 = 30

Spike 1+3+2+2+2 = 10

Ed 13 + 2 = 15

Lisa 13 + 2 = 15

Judy 8 + 2 = 10

Mama 2 + 2 = 4

Total = 84 okay

total pastries= 84

papa=30

lisa=15

mama=4

ed=15

judy=10

spike=10

1. 78 – 1/3(78)= 56 -1= 55 (papa +28 and spike +1)

2. 55-3= 52 ; 52 – 1/4(52)=39 (ed +13 and spike +3)

3. 39 – 1/3(39)= 26 – 2= 24 (lisa +13 and spike +2)

4. 24 – 8= 16 ; 16 – 1/8(16)= 14 (judy +8 and spike +2)

5. 14 – 2= 12 ;12 – 2 = 10 (mama +2 and spike +2)

6. 10/5= 2 (each person except spike gets 2 more)

this is called a logic problem , or logic test or LOGIC GRID puzzle,

though, in my opinion, it isn’t really logic.

there is an easy ( though complicated looking) way to solve it.

I’ll see if i can get you a good ref & explanation, cause i don’t really enjoy working them.

http://www.vermilionschools.org/teacherweb/VIS/Bmcmullen/logic.htm

click the first option on the page.

It shows you how to solve this kind.
