S Reading rousseau for history and stephen carter for English comp?

in his social contract roussea talks about something called “civil religion” he says that it is up to society to establish the articles of a purely civil faith, that the state has no power to oblige anyone to believe the articles but may banish anyone that doesnt believe them and that if someone conducts his life life he doesnt believe them after professoing to believe them they deserve the death penalty- he then goes on to say that religious intolerance is unnaceptable and dangerous to liberty?? and then in stephen carters separation of chirch and state he carter says that taking in God we trust off our money would wipe out our civil religion and that many federal courts dont get the importance of a civil religion. the term came up in two of my readings that were written like 200 years apart so it must be pretty significant. i jst cant seem to wrap my mind around the concept? what is civil religion exactly? any help would be appreciated.
