five times a number. in the back of my book its 5xn why isnt it nx5 because my teacher taught me that n goes first

just convert the words “five times a number” to an equation, so the answer is 5xn, and not nx5 (number times five)

Both answers are right. You are seeing what is called the “commutative property of multiplication.” Think of it this way….

You write n5 and the book says 5n. Do you agree that 10 * 2 is the exact same thing as 2 * 10? THAT is the commutative property! We can change the order of two things being multiplied and it doesn’t change the answer.

Because math people tend to be organized, we write the number first, then the variable. That comes in very handy later on when you are combining like terms, factoring, etc. The number is called the coefficient, by the way.

If your teacher is counting it wrong, politely ask her if the commutative property doesn’t apply on this particular problem (it does, I promise).

the order doesn’t matter as long its mulitiplication and addition. but with subtraction and division order matters.

For Example 6 x 5=30 and 5 x 6=30

6+5=11

5+6=11
