How do you write an effective introductory paragraph?

I’m working on two essays, but I’m having trouble with my introductory paragraghs. One essay is about being true to yourself. While the other one is about not denying your feelings.

For an essay, an effective introductory paragraph kind of says what you are going to say without giving it all away.

For example, I might start: “Being true to yourself is very important in the long run, but in the short run it can be really hard. ” (Then explain why it’s important, then give the example of where it was really hard, then conclude.)

For your other topic, a beginning might be: “I used to think it was best to deny my feelings, especially if I didn’t like what the feeling was. But now I know better.”

I hope you understand these are just ideas of how to approach the subject — they may not fit your thoughts at all.

The important part is to get the reader interested. Don’t start with a philosophical discussion, start with what the subject means to you.

Cleverly intoduce your topic, possibly use an example. Briefly state your main points that will be covered in your body paragraphs. Have a thesis statement that all of your essay will focus on and return to.
