Question for Science Teachers only?

Does hot water freeze faster than cold water?

In other words, if you filled two ice cube trays, one with hot water and one with cold water, and put them both in the same freezer, which will freeze first?

I am a High School Science Teacher. Hot water cools faster than cold water but it does not freeze faster except under special circumstances. If you put two ice cube trays in the freezer, one with water at 5c and the other with water at 100c the cold water has much less cooling to do to get to 0c therefore it will freeze faster. In a circustance known as the Mpemba effect it can actually freeze faster. If you want to know more look at this web site.

I am not a science teacher, but it is obvious that the cold ice cubes will freeze faster. They will freeze faster than the warmer ones because it will take less time to solidify.

The hot water (in specific circumstances). This is known as the Mpemba effect.

Why don’t you just try it and see what happens.
