Because hard objects would create a bounce-back situation when the change of momentum kicks in.
Soft objects absorb energy, not reflect it, so they would cushion a blow.

Soft objects absorb the energy from a falling object and less is bounced back, unlike a hard surface where almost all the energy is bounced back, thus causing pain.

because when somthing hits these mats, airbags…etc the momentum is strong when it hit it….but on impact the force is lessoned/absorbed so it is not as it would be as if the objesct was non-rigid…. in otherwords…you would hit harder on a hard object…that cant obsorb any on-pact hits…than a soft cushiny object…
