when you do scientific notation, there can be ONLY ONE NON-ZERO number in front of the decimal.

when you move the decimal left, increase the exponent.

when you move the decimal right, decrease the exponent.

(you can easily understand this by telling yourself, did i make the number smaller or bigger? if you’ve made it smaller, make the exponent bigger. vise versa.)

1) 9,040,000,000

9.04 x 10 ^ 9

2) 0.02

2 x 10 ^ -2 or 2.00 x 10 ^ -2

3) 9.3 million ( 9, 300, 000 )

9.3 x 10 ^ 6

4) 21,700

2.17 x 10 ^ 4

5) 0.00325

3.25 x 10 ^ – 3

6) 8,003,000

8.003 x 10 ^ 6

7) 0.00092

9.2 x 10 ^ – 4

8) 0.0156

1.56 x 10 ^ – 2

for the larger numbers move the decimal point to the left so that there is only one digit before the point.

ie: 9,040,000,000 = 9.04 x 10 to the 9th power (how many spaces you moved it)

for the really small numbers move the decimal point to the right so that there is only one digit on the left

ie: 0.02 = 2.0 x 10 to the 2nd power
