1. little experience with reading extended texts (everything is communicated in short blurbs on the internet and texting) = short attention span
2. overuse of cell phones and ipods…even in class
3. sense of entitlement (you don’t get an A for simply showing up!)
4. viewing all education as vocational training – that we learn to get a good job and make lots of money rather than learning for its own sake, to become better people and more aware of our world
Ideal student
studies, pays attention, wants to learn for its own sake, is respectful to teacher and others, asks questions about the materiall, does work long before its due, reads in free time, is open and inquisitive, is patient and hard working
To overcome this, spend time in a library. Look up old articles on microfiche. Find out how to order books from the library of Congress. Ask a librarian for suggestions.
Qualities of an ideal student:
A thirst for knowledge. Seeking more than is required for the assignment.
Neatness Counts! Pride in your work. Should turn in neat projects with punctuation and spelling errors corrected.
If it is a paper write and then re-write! Act like an author!
Ask questions! Brings up questions in class. Their questions are probably what other students want to know but are afraid to ask.
Extra-Curricular activities.
Another drawback of the computer/web site issue is the inability of today’s students to use proper English! They can’t even handle the spell check button, yet they think their teachers won’t notice that the work they turn in isn’t their own!
An ideal student would NOT post their homework for others, rather he/she would make a good faith attempt to do it on their own, post the results and THEN ask for help.
