to figure this out you need to find an answer that is divisable by 3 and 4. 12, 24, 36, 48

first one that works is 36 for this problem

For now the father is 32, the son is 8 4×8 = 32

in four years the son will be 12 the dad 36 3x 12 = 36

Brett is 8. His father is 32 (8×4) In 4 yrs Brett will be 12. Dad will be 36. 1/3 of 36 is 12.

Right now they are 8 and 32

x = Brett’s age; x+4 = 1/3(4x + 4), so x = 4x/3 + 4/3 – 4, or

x/3 = 8/3, so x = 8

Brett is 8, and his father is 32
