Bea raised some cows and some turkeys . She raised a total of 28 cows and turkeys . There were 96 legs in all . How many cows and how many turkeys did Bea raise ?

Let x = number of cows
Let y = number ofturkeys
Cows have 4 legs, turkeys have 2 legs
Total legs = 96
So 4x + 2y = 96
x + y =28
So x = 28 – y
Using substitution
4(28 – y) + 2y = 96
So 112 – 4y + 2y = 96
So 112 – 2y = 96
So 112 – 96 = 2y
So 16 = 2y
So y = 8
Thus you have 8 turkeys which leaves the other 20 animals as cows
