1.

Let x = The total number of cattle.

1/2 x + 1/8 x + 1/10 x + 1/20 x + 1/60 x + 50 = x

2.

Solve the equation:

First, you must find a common denominator between all of the fractions. In this case, it will be 120. Convert all the fractions and you get:

60/120 x + 15/120 x + 12/120 x + 6/120x + 2/120+50 = x

That gives you:

95/120x + 50 = x

You can reduce 95/120 to 19/24.

19/24x + 50 = x

50 = x – 19/24

50 = 5/24 x

Multiply by 24

50(24) = 5x

1200 / 5 = 240

So, 240 must be the size of the herd.

3. To check the solution, let’s see if it works out.

There’s 240 (1/2) or 120 cattle in the first place.

240 (1/8) or 30 in the next.

240 (1/10) or 24 in the next.

240 (1/20) or 12 in the next.

240 (1/60) or 4 in the next.

Add them up: 120+30+24+12+4 = 190

190 plus the extra 50 = 240.

So, 240 is the correct answer!

Good luck!
