China was colonized the the British, as was India and part of Southeast Asia. South Africa was colonized by the Dutch; the Congo was colonized by Belgium. In all cases, the countries doing the colonization were looking for resources: gold, lumber, rubber, opium, etc. For example, the Dutch got diamonds in South Africa; the British got gold, rubber, and jewels in India, and opium in China, and Belgium got land and lumber in the Congo.
