Pick a big political, social, or economic topic, a topic that is in every news outlet. Then interview those who are close to you, friends, family, fellow students, etc. on their ideas and views on the topic. Find out how the average American is participating or not participating. You could even choose several topics.

Iraq, how the government is dealing with it, how your state government is dealing with it (or not) and how several of your friends and family are.

Housing market, Parenting (i.e. Britney’s parenting styles vs. your own parents), Iraq, unemployment rates, graduates opportunities in employment market, etc.

Bring large events and big egos down to the thoughts of average American.

Don’t use people you expect to have the same thought pattern. Interview those who are wild cards as well. You may be surprised at what you find, than again your documentary may be that your not surprised at all.

YOUR TOPIC: How out of touch (or in touch) is the Big picture (Federal government, Mass media, etc.) with the average American in your neighborhood?

You could also do one on the high school experience by taking a look at how technology plays a huge part in teenager’s lives. You could even contrast this with the amish youth.

Pick a subject of interest TO YOU. Your idea will be best expressed and of interest to others if YOU are interested in the subject.

Interviews of older folks with “Great Stories” is fun too if you segue between interviews with shots of the places they talk about and do some nice intercutting during their yarns.

Don’t forget to give us an overview of what we will be experiencing in the beginning.
