More math help needed?

My daughter is very far behind on her math and she didnt bring the book home for me to see the examples, therefore I dont know how to help her. I dont want just the answer, i want to know how to get the answer. a few examples are…

-6 * (12) (the * is a dot, i believe means multiply).

-72 over 8 (division?)

-16 divided by (-2)

another question, when multiplying and dividing, what are the rules for negatives and positives? ex..

(positive) x (negative) = ?

(negative) x (negative) = ?

(negative) divided by (positive) = ?

(negative) divided by (negative) = ?

Thanks

Rules are:

Pos x Pos = Pos

Pos x Neg = Neg

Neg x Neg = Pos

Pos/Pos = Pos

Pos/Neg = Neg

Neg/Pos = Neg

Neg/Neg = Pos

so in your example:

-6 * 12 = -72

-72/8 = -9

and

-16/-2 = 8

-6*12 = -72 (negative 6 times 12 )

-72/8 = -9 (-72 divided by +8)

-16/-2 = 8 (negative divided by negative is positive)

a positive times a negative is always negative

negative times a negative is always positive

same thing for division

Thank goodness I started doing this stuff. The rules are: 1. Positive x negative equals, I believe, negative. 2. Two negatives= positive. 3. two positives= positive. 4. Negative divided by positive= I believe negative. 5. Negative divided by negative = positive. The answers of the given problems should be -72, -9, and 8. I hope it helps!

Positive * negavtive = negative

negative * negative =positive

negative divided by positive =negative

negative divided bye negative = positive

-6*12=-72

-72 over 8= -9

-16 divided bye -2=positive 8

Hoped that helped i didnt get it either until my dad made that key up for me. Its really easy to remember.

-6*(12) = -72

-72 / 8 = – 9

-16 / -2 = 8

(positive) x (negative) = (negative)

(negative) x (negative) = (positive)

(negative) divided by (positive) = (negative)

(negative) divided by (negative) = (positive)

note: when multiplying and dividing;

unlike signs = negative

like signs = positive

positive X negative = negative

negative X negative = positive

negative / negative = positive

negative / positive = negative (or vice versa)

in short: same signs is equal to positive while different signs is equal to negative.

-6*12 = -72

-72/8 = -9

-16/-2 = 8

-72

-9

8

If you need to work out answers to these type of problems, use a calculator if you don’t know the answers.

(positive) x (negative) = negative

(negative) x (negative) = positive

(negative) divided by (positive) = negative

(negative) divided by (negative) = positive

the dot does mean multiply.

-72 over 8 is division

pos x neg= neg

neg x neg= pos

neg / pos= neg

neg / neg= pos

hope that helps

pos x neg = neg

neg x neg = pos

neg / pos = neg

neg / neg = pos

I think of it as: if there’s an even # of negatives, the answer will be positive. If there’s an odd # of them, it will be negative.

so, -6*12 = -24 (odd # of negatives)

-72/8 = -9

-16/-2 = 8 (even # of negatives)

seems greek to me sorry…been out of school tooo long..but I do know 2 negatives make a positive that’s common knowledge. but 2 positives DO NOT make a negative…

…. I think lots might not come here to help you they think some kid wants to get their homework answers too fast without thinking.. I know thats what I thought….GOOD LUCK
