In the first question, the equation is missing.. that information is needed to complete the problem. If it is a quadratic equation, you should find the vertex, since the equation can have maxium / minimum only at the vertex.

Set up a box – chart to solve the second question. Make a 3×3 grid and label the top with Investing Amount, Interest Rate, Interest Amount. Label the left side column with Account 1, Account 2, Total. In this grid, the rows multiply ( IA * IR = IA) and the columns add (Act 1 + Act 2 = Total)! Try it, it can be fun 🙂

You can complete the third one using a chart like in the second. For the third use Rate * Time = Distance along the top, and Before Increase, After Increase along the left side. You will get two equations and can use Substitution (or Elimination) to solve them.

I’m sure about the first one : Bill earns X + $1 per hour Bob earns X per hour 8 hours combined salary is $48 therefor X=hourly rate 8(X+1)+8X=48 16X+8=48 16X=40 X=40/16=2.5 Bill earns $3.50 and Bob earns $2.50 per hour The second one I may be wrong, but Stan and Roger have each half a lawn to mow, so Stan takes 1.5 hour(s) and Roger takes an hour. The total will be 2.5 hours assuming that Roger has a nice long Daiquiri after he finishes his half.

p=5x^2-30, assume. You don’t have the equation.

p=profit x=number of vice presidents

to find the number of vice presidents to maximize the company’s profit,

using calculus: dp/dx=10x-30

10x-30=0

x=3 vice presidents

Without Calculus,

evaluate 5x^2-30 for x=1,2,3,4,etc and find when it reaches maximum
