You need a common denominator. In the first problem that would be 24, because 3, 8 and 12 all go into 24. Now change each fraction to that denominator, multiplying top and bottom by the SAME number:

2/3 = 16/24

3/8 = 9/24

5/12 = 10/24

Add just the numerators, keeping 24 as the denominator:

16 + 9 + 10 = 35

So you have 35/24 which is improper. Divide to get a mixed number: 1and11/24.

For the subraction problem, you will have to get a common denominator as well, and borrow as necessary:

7 and 4/5 = 7 and 12/15

To subtract this from 18 and 6/15, you need to borrow. The 18 goes to 17, and when you add 1 to 6/15 you get 21/15.

Now you can subtract:

first the whole numbers, 17 – 7 = 10

now the fractions, 21/15- 12/15 = 9/15 (reduce to 3/5)

final answer: 10 and 3/5

that’s it!

ADDITION:-

change the three fractions so that all 3 have a common denominator. in this case, let the common denominator be 24. (coz 24 is the least common product value of the 3 numbers…ie 3, 8 and 12)

for 2/3, multiply both the numerator and denominator by 8.

= (2*8) / (3*8)

= 16 / 24

for 3/8, multiply both the numerator and denominator by 3.

= (3*3) / (8*3)

= 9 / 24

for 5/12, multiply both the numerator and denominator by 2.

= (5*2) / (12*2)

= 10 / 24

now that u have all the 3 fractions with the common denominator (24), add the numerator arithmetically.

= (16+9+10) / 24

= 35 / 24

= 1 and 11/24.

SUBTRACTION:-

7 and 4/5

= (7*5+4)/5

= 39/5

18 and 6/15

= (18*15+6)/15

= 276/15

Similarly, change the 1st fraction so that it has a common denominator as the other. in this case, let the common denominator be 15.

for 39/5, multiply both the numerator and denominator by 3.

= (39*3) / (5*3)

= 117 / 15

Now that u have both fractions with the common denominator (15), subtract the second fraction from the first.

= (117-276) / 15

= -159 / 15

= -10 and 3/5

Add Question: You need a common denominator.

That is a wholenumber into which the lower (division numbers) will divide.

2/3 + 3/8 + 5/12 = ?

Common denominator is 24

2/3 + 3/8 + 5/12 = (10 + 16 + 9)/24 = 35/24 = 1 11/24

7 4/5 – 18 6/15 = ?

Common denominator is 15

7 12/15 – 18 6/15 = -9 -6/15 = 8 and 9/15

Hope it helps Years since I did this stuff – took me ages to remember

2/3= 16/24

3/8=9/24

5/12=10/24

equals 35/24 or 1 11/24

7 4/5 -18 6/15

is like

18 6/15 – 7 4/5= 11 3/5 but then that the answer is -11 3/5

16/24 + 9/24 + 10/24 = 35/24 = 1 11/24

7 4/5 = 39/5

18 6/15 = 18 2/5 = 92/5

39/5 – 92/5 = -53/5 = -10 3/5

Hope this helps.

to add fractions you need the same denominator (Bottom #) your denominator should be 24 for that addition problem. For the subtraction, make the mixed numbers into improper fractions. Do 5×7+4 and 15×18+6. Those will be your top numbers. then get common denominators again and this time it should be 15. Good luck. You can understand this.

err for the first one you find common denominators for all of them so its

16/24 + 9/24 + 10/24 and it equals 35/24 wich is 1 and 11/24 as a mixed fraction if you need it .

the second is sorta confusing so yea…
