In honor of school spirit week, the student coucil decided to decorate lockers in the main hallway of the school. the frosh class off stuck a dceal of smiley the school mascot on every 3rd locker starting w/ the 3rd. the soph class off taped a coupon for a free soda for the sat game on every 4th locker starting w/ the 4th, the jr class off put black and purple ribbons, the schools colors, on every 6th locker starting w/ the 6th locker. the sr class off used washable pain and painted the words go team go on every 8th locker, starting w/ the 8th… if the hallway has a total of 1000 lockers how many of those lockers will have black and purple ribbon?

The answer is actually 1000/6 = 166.67 = 166 which is to say that 166 lockers will have black and purple ribbon.

You should not subtract 5 from 1000 because they started from the 6th locker. Let’s say that there were only 20 lockers. Then the ribbons would have been on three lockers (6, 12 and 18), which is the same same 20/6 = 3.33 = 3

If you do (20 – 5) / 6, like the previous guys tajme5 suggested, you will get 2.5 or 2 lockers which is incorrect as you can see.

So your answer is 166 lockers

1000 lockers. – 5 ( they statred with the sixth locker) = 995

995/6= 165.8333333…

so 165 lockers have ribbons
