Math help? again?

alright so i know how to do stuff like 5x=30; x=6. that i can handle but when it comes to stuff like 9 – 4x = 6x + 2 – 3x…i get really confused. can someone please explain how to do 9 – 4x = 6x + 2 – 3x? i have a test on this tomorrow. HELP!!!?

9-4x=6x+2-3x Combine 6x and -3x

9-4x=3x+2 Now you want to get x’s on one side(ad 4x to each side)

9=7x+2 Now subtract 2 so x’s will be alone on one side

7=7x Now divide by 7 so x will be completely alone.

1=x

Take a deep breath and relax. ^_^

The methods to solving the short equations can also be used for longer ones.

How did you solve 5x = 30? You divided both sides by 5 to get (5x)/5 = (30)/5, which becomes x = 6.

For 9 – 4x = 6x + 2 – 3x the first step is to try and make it a smaller equation.

You can subtract a number from both sides of the equation, like 2. This will give you 9 – 4x – 2 = 6x + 2 -3x -2, which becomes 7 – 4x = 6x – 3x.

You can simplify it again by combining terms and then adding something to both sides. Hope this helps!

It is like having

5x=30 expanded

2x+3x=10+20

that’s the same thing.

now if I subtract 10 from both sides

2x+3x-10=(10-10)+20

I get

2x+3x-10=20

now subtract 3x from both sides

2x+(3x-3x)-10=20-3x

I get

2x-10=20-3x

see? the equation you solved is really no different from one you were having problems with. So let’s work the other problem:

9 – 4x = 6x + 2 – 3x

Let’s get all the terms with and “x” together

Let’s start by adding 4x to both sides

9-4x+4x=6x+2-3x+4x

do you see the -4x+4x add up to zero? so…

9=6x+2-3x+4x

now we have all the “x” terms on the right side, but we also have one term without an “x” – we have the +2, too. Let’s subtract 2 from bother sides:

9-2=6x+(2-2)-3x+4x

2-2 is zero, right?

9-2=6x-3x+4x

what’s 9-2? 7

7=6x-3x+4x

What is 6-3+4? 7

so 6x-3x+4x will be 7x.

7= 6x-3x+4x becomes

7=7x

that’s something you can solve right?

x=1

always check your work by plugging the answer back into the equation

9 – 4x = 6x + 2 – 3x

9 – 4(1)=6(1)+2-3(1)

9-4=6+2-3

5=5 !

The first step is to group any like terms that are on each side of the equation…so on the right side of the equation you have two like variables (6x and -3x):

9-4x=3x+2

now, lets move all your variables to the left side of the equation:

9-4x-3x=3x+2-3x which becomes 9-7x=2

Next, move all your numerals to the right side of the equation:

9-7x-9=2-9 which becomes -7x=-7

from here, you should be able to solve, getting 1

9-4x = 6x+2-3x

(6x-3x=3x)

9-4x=3x+2

( -3x -3x)

(-4x – 3x= -7x, 3x – 3x= 0)

9-7x=2

-9 -9

(9 – 9=0, 2 – 9= -7)

-7x=-7

x=1

remember to just do the same operation to each side of the equal sign after combining like terms. (6x and -3x)
