Making equations?

How do you find the slope on a table? By not graphing it. I really need to make an equation.

And this is how the table looks like

Bus Numer: 1 ! 2 ! 3 ! 4 ! 5 ! 6 ! 7 ! 8 !

Gas used: 5 ! 8 ! 12 ! 15 ! 18 ! 20 ! 22 ! 25 !

Miles Driven: 80 ! 100 ! 180 ! 225 ! 280 ! 290 ! 320 ! 375 !

Can you give me step by step information on how to make the equation?

the gas used is your x facto. The miles driven is your y factor…so put them into points…Bus 1 is (5,80) bus 2 is (8,100) bus 3 is (12,180) and so forth. To get the slope use equation m (for slope) m=y2-y1

——–

x2-x1

So now just plug in the #s using only two points…so bus 1 and bus 2 would look like this m=100-80 / 5-8 so m=20/-3 so the slope is -20 over 3

On a graph you would go down 20 and over to the right 3 to plot all your pts

first lable x’s and y’s

bus number- x

gas used- y

the equation looks like this

y1-y2

———

x1-x2

that means you take one y (easiest would be the largest y) minus a different y (the smallest y)

divide by the largest x minus the smalles x

and remember you have to subtract both sides before you can divide

the finale equation is y = mx + b

m is your slope

so it would be y(any y you chose) = (your new slope) times (any x you chose) + b
